An advocate for nonviolent civil disobedience, King became a civil rights icon in the United States and around the world. King is best known for his role in the American civil rights movement, which he led from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, King was the son of Martin Luther King Sr., a Baptist minister, and Alberta Williams King, a former schoolteacher. King was a gifted student, graduating from high school at the age of 15. He went on to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he earned a degree in sociology. After graduating from Morehouse, King attended Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in divinity.

In 1954, King became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He quickly became involved in the civil rights movement, leading the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955-1956. The boycott was a success, and it helped to desegregate the buses in Montgomery.

In 1957, King helped to found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC),an organization that coordinated the civil rights movement throughout the South. King served as the SCLC's first president until his assassination in 1968.

King led a number of nonviolent protests and campaigns throughout the South, including the Birmingham campaign in 1963 and the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965. These protests helped to raise awareness of the civil rights movement and to put pressure on the federal government to pass legislation that would protect the rights of African Americans.

In 1964, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in the civil rights movement. He continued to lead the movement until his assassination in 1968. King's legacy continues to inspire people around the world.

King's Philosophy of Nonviolence

King's philosophy of nonviolence was based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. He believed that love was the most powerful force in the world, and that it could overcome even the most deeply rooted hatred.

King argued that nonviolence was not simply a passive form of resistance, but rather an active and powerful force for change. He believed that nonviolence could create a "beloved community" in which all people, regardless of their race, religion, or gender, could live together in peace and harmony.

King's philosophy of nonviolence has been adopted by many other social justice movements around the world. His legacy continues to inspire people to fight for justice and equality through peaceful means.

King's Legacy

King's legacy is one of peace, justice, and equality. He was a visionary leader who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of all people. His work helped to change the course of history, and his ideas continue to inspire people around the world.

King's legacy is not just about his words, but also about his actions. He was a man of courage and conviction, who was willing to risk his life for what he believed in. He was a true leader, who inspired millions of people to follow in his footsteps.

King's legacy is a reminder that one person can make a difference. We all have the power to create a better world, if we are willing to stand up for what we believe in and to fight for justice and equality.
