In the early 19th century, the Arctic was a vast and mysterious place. No one had ever reached the North Pole, and many people believed that it was impossible to do so. But a few intrepid explorers were determined to prove them wrong.

The disappearance of Franklin's expedition sparked a massive search effort. Over the next few years, dozens of ships and hundreds of men were sent to the Arctic in search of the lost explorers. But all of these expeditions failed, and the fate of Franklin and his crew remained a mystery.

In 1854, a British naval officer named Francis McClintock finally solved the mystery of Franklin's disappearance. McClintock found the remains of Franklin's ships and the bodies of some of his crew members. Franklin and his crew had become trapped in the ice and had been forced to abandon their ships. They had then attempted to walk to safety, but they had died of starvation and exposure before they could reach land.
