In the heart of the American Midwest, during the tumultuous years of the Great Depression, a young boy named Jesse James Sutton came of age. His story, as told in Barb Rosenstock's Prairie Boy, is a timeless tale of resilience, determination, and the indomitable spirit of the human heart.
Jesse was born in 1912, the eldest son of a poor farming family in Oklahoma. His childhood was marked by hardship and poverty, but also by a deep love for the land and the simple pleasures of country life. As a young boy, Jesse helped his father with the farm work, and he learned the value of hard work and self-reliance. He also developed a passion for reading and writing, which would stay with him throughout his life.
When Jesse was fourteen years old, his family was forced to sell their farm and move to Kansas. The move was difficult for Jesse, who had grown attached to his childhood home and the friends he had made there. However, he quickly adapted to his new surroundings, and he soon found a new home in the small town of Lakin.
In Lakin, Jesse attended high school and began to develop his writing skills. He wrote for the school newspaper and the town's weekly newspaper, and he won several awards for his work. He also became involved in the local 4-H club, where he learned about agriculture and livestock. After graduating from high school, Jesse attended Kansas State University, where he studied journalism. He graduated in 1938, and he returned to Lakin to begin his career as a newspaper reporter.
Jesse's newspaper career was cut short by World War II. He was drafted into the Army in 1942, and he served in the Pacific theater of operations. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery in combat, and he returned home to Lakin in 1945 as a war hero.
After the war, Jesse resumed his newspaper career. He worked as a reporter and editor for several newspapers in Kansas, and he eventually became the owner of the Lakin Independent. He also served as the mayor of Lakin for several terms, and he was active in many other community organizations. Jesse died in 2002 at the age of ninety, but his legacy continues to live on in the town of Lakin and in the hearts of his family and friends.
Prairie Boy is a moving and inspiring story about a young man's coming-of-age in the American heartland. It is a story about the challenges and triumphs of rural life, and it is a story about the indomitable spirit of the human heart. Prairie Boy is a must-read for anyone who is interested in American history, the Great Depression, or the American heartland.
