In 1981, Li Kun met Li Cunxin, a young dancer from the Beijing Dance Academy. Li Cunxin was one of China's most famous dancers, and he was known as Mao's last dancer. Li Kun and Li Cunxin fell in love quickly, and they were married in 1982. The couple had two children together, a son and a daughter.

In 1987, Li Cunxin and Li Kun defected to Australia. They were the first Chinese dancers to ever defect to the West. The couple's defection caused a major scandal in China, and they were both branded as traitors. However, Li Cunxin and Li Kun were determined to build a new life for themselves and their family in Australia.

Li Kun has since become a successful businesswoman and author. She has written two books about her life, The Peasant Princess and The Empty Room. She is also a passionate advocate for human rights and social justice.
