In his groundbreaking new book, Race, Empire, and Revolution in the BFree Downloadlands, author Thomas J. Brown offers a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which race and empire have shaped the American Southwest's past, present, and future. Brown argues that the region's history is inseparable from the history of race and empire, and that the two have been mutually constitutive.
The book begins by examining the Spanish colonial period in the Southwest, during which time the region was transformed into a racialized society. Brown shows how the Spanish imposed a system of racial hierarchy on the indigenous population, and how this system was used to justify the conquest and colonization of the region.
The book then goes on to examine the Mexican period in the Southwest, during which time the region was part of Mexico. Brown shows how the Mexican government continued to enforce the Spanish system of racial hierarchy, and how this system contributed to the region's ongoing social and economic problems.
The book concludes by examining the American period in the Southwest, during which time the region was annexed by the United States. Brown shows how the United States continued to enforce the system of racial hierarchy that had been established by the Spanish and Mexican governments. He also shows how the American government used race to justify its own conquest and colonization of the region.
Race, Empire, and Revolution in the BFree Downloadlands is a major contribution to the study of race and empire in the American Southwest. Brown's book provides a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which race and empire have shaped the region's history, and it offers a new perspective on the region's present and future.
