In 1981, a mysterious new disease began to appear in gay men in New York City. The disease, which would later be known as AIDS, was a devastating and deadly virus that attacked the immune system. By the end of the decade, AIDS had spread to all corners of the United States and had become a global pandemic.

The early days of the AIDS epidemic were a time of fear and ignorance. The government was slow to respond to the crisis, and many people believed that AIDS was a punishment from God. As the epidemic spread, the stigma associated with AIDS grew, and people with the disease were often ostracized and discriminated against.

But amidst the fear and despair, there were also stories of hope and courage. Activists and advocates fought tirelessly to raise awareness of AIDS and to demand government action. People with AIDS fought back against the stigma and discrimination they faced. And scientists worked tirelessly to develop new treatments and find a cure.

The fight against AIDS has been a long and difficult one, but there have been significant victories along the way. In 1987, the FDA approved the first drug to treat AIDS, and since then, a number of other effective treatments have been developed. In 1996, the Ryan White CARE Act was passed, providing federal funding for HIV/AIDS care and treatment. And in 2010, the Affordable Care Act was passed, which expanded access to health insurance for people with HIV/AIDS.

Today, people with HIV/AIDS can live long and healthy lives. But the fight is not over. AIDS is still a global pandemic, and there is still no cure. We must continue to fight for funding for research, for access to care and treatment, and for an end to the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

Viral: The Fight Against AIDS in America is a gripping and heartbreaking account of the fight against AIDS in America. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the history of this devastating disease and the ongoing struggle to find a cure.
