Dr. Donald Sutherland is a Canadian pediatrician who has dedicated his life to helping children in need. In 1999, he founded Operation Lifeline Sudan, a program that has brought over 1,000 children from war-torn Sudan to Canada for life-saving surgeries.

Sutherland was first inspired to help Sudanese children after seeing a documentary about the country's civil war. He was horrified by the images of children who had been injured or orphaned by the conflict. He knew that he had to do something to help.

Sutherland traveled to Sudan in 2000 and met with Dr. Tom Catena, a Catholic missionary who had been working in the country for many years. Catena told Sutherland about the desperate need for medical care in Sudan. He said that there were thousands of children who needed surgery, but that there were no surgeons available to help them.

Sutherland was determined to help these children. He returned to Canada and began raising funds and recruiting volunteers for Operation Lifeline Sudan. In 2001, he led the first team of Canadian surgeons to Sudan. The team performed over 100 surgeries on children who had been injured by the war.

Since then, Operation Lifeline Sudan has brought over 1,000 children to Canada for life-saving surgeries. The children have been treated for a variety of conditions, including burns, gunshot wounds, and amputations. Many of the children have also received prosthetics and other medical devices.

The work of Operation Lifeline Sudan has made a profound difference in the lives of these children. Many of them would have died if they had not received surgery. Others have been able to regain their health and mobility. All of them have been given a new chance at life.

Sutherland is a humble man who does not seek recognition for his work. He is simply grateful for the opportunity to help these children.

"These children are the future of Sudan," he said. "I am just happy to be able to give them a chance to live."
