Dr. King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He became a Baptist minister and civil rights activist in the 1950s, and he quickly rose to prominence as a leader of the movement for racial equality.
Dr. King's nonviolent approach to protest was based on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. He believed that love and compassion were more powerful than violence and hate, and he urged his followers to meet violence with peace.
In 1963, Dr. King led the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where he delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. In this speech, Dr. King called for an end to racial discrimination and segregation, and he urged Americans to come together as one people.
Dr. King's work helped to bring about major changes in American society. He was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed discrimination based on race.
Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. He was only 39 years old. His death was a great loss to the civil rights movement, but his legacy continues to live on.
Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a national holiday in the United States. It is a day to reflect on Dr. King's life and work, and to recommit ourselves to the principles of peace, love, and equality.
