When the Civil War broke out, Shelby joined the Confederate army and quickly rose to the rank of general. He commanded the cavalry in Missouri and Arkansas, and he led his men on daring raids deep into enemy territory. Shelby was a brilliant military tactician, and he was known for his courage and determination. He was also a fierce partisan, and he fought a bitter guerrilla war against Union forces in Missouri.
